So suddenly I'm loving sewing! Actually, it started with the Great British Sewing Bee last year, when I saw the lovely A-line skirt that Lauren made, trimmed with bias binding, and I thought "I could do that!"... And so I did. Although learning to make bias binding has taken a little longer.
I had a go at an A-line skirt, which I trimmed with ribbon. What did I learn? That the traditional pattern-makers still use sizes that were set in the fifties, whereas high street shops have moved on. So when I bought my pattern for the size I thought I'd be, that was my RTW size, not my nineteen-fifties size... So after I'd bought the same pattern again in the larger range, I made the skirt!
Pattern: Butterick B4461
Fabric: Posie in turquoise from Denise Schmidt's Flea Market Fancy range
I also made a little zippered pouch for my very good friend who now sews too :)
Then from there I decided to make a dress, and chose this:
Pattern: Socialite dress by Anna Maria Horner
Fabric: Cell Structure in Americana from the Field Study range by Anna Maria Horner
After that I got a new book, Sew Serendipity, which I love, thought about making one of the skirts, but instead launched straight into a jacket:
Pattern: Jacket from Sew Serendipity, fingertip length
Fabric: Josephine's bouquet in Slate from the Cameo range by Amy Butler
What did I learn? That I really really like to have pockets!
I love the fact that I have so much to learn, but at the same time, I do have a solid foundation of knowledge from the dressmaking I did at school - I made a skirt, a blouse, a pair of trousers, and a nightie (hideous beyond belief!). So what's next???
